The National Service Scheme (NSS) unit of Holy Cross College, Kozhikode, has taken a significant step toward social equity by participating in the “Barrier-Free Kozhikode Mega Audit”. This initiative, conducted in collaboration with the Thiruvambady Grama Panchayat, is a key part of the district administration’s ‘Sahamithra’ project, which aims to transform Kozhikode into Kerala’s first fully disabled-friendly district.

Transforming Advocacy into Action

The audit was designed to identify and eliminate physical barriers that prevent persons with disabilities from accessing public spaces. Key aspects of the campaign included:

  • Infrastructure Assessment: Dedicated NSS volunteers inspected various public buildings, including the Krishi Bhavan, Anganwadis, and other government offices within the Thiruvambady Grama Panchayat.

  • Data-Driven Solutions: Using the ‘Sahamithra’ mobile app, students collected precise data on ramps, entrances, and sanitary facilities to ensure they meet national and international accessibility standards.

  • Official Collaboration: The drive was formally inaugurated by the Thiruvambady Panchayat President, Jithin Pallattu, and witnessed active participation from ward members and local officials.

Building an Inclusive Future

Presided over by the College Principal, Dr. Sr. Shiny George, and coordinated by NSS Program Officer Lijo Jose, the project emphasizes that accessibility is a fundamental right rather than a privilege. By engaging in this mega audit, the Holy Cross NSS unit continues its mission of creating a more compassionate society, following their previous successes in health and anti-drug campaigns.

The “Barrier-Free Kozhikode” initiative is set to assess over 7,000 public buildings across the district, with thousands of volunteers leading the charge toward a “God’s Own Country” that is truly open to everyone.
