Kozhikode: In a significant effort to strengthen democratic participation, the students of Holy Cross Institute of Management and Technology (HCIMT) organized an extensive election awareness campaign titled “Smart Voter.” The initiative was held in collaboration with the District Administration, SVEEP (Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation) Kozhikode, the Election Literacy Club (ELC), and the National Service Scheme (NSS) unit of the college.

Campaign Inauguration and Objectives

The campaign was officially inaugurated by the College Principal, Dr. Sr. Shiny George, who also released the official “Smart Voter” campaign posters. The primary objective of the program was to encourage 100% voter turnout and to educate the public—especially first-time voters and persons with disabilities—about the importance of exercising their right to vote.

Extensive Outreach Activities

The campaign saw active participation from over 40 NSS volunteers and ELC members, covering several key locations across Kozhikode:

  • Public Hubs: Mananchira, New Bus Stand, Palayam Bus Stand, and the Kozhikode Railway Station.

  • Community Engagement: Kattuvayal Colony, Vellayil Harbour, and various residential flats.

  • Commercial Areas: Local business establishments and institutions.

During these visits, students engaged directly with commuters, residents, and laborers, explaining the voting process and the importance of environmental conservation within the electoral framework.

Digital Empowerment: The Saksham App

A highlight of the campaign was the introduction of the “Saksham” mobile application developed by the Election Commission. Students provided hands-on demonstrations on how the app assists voters with disabilities, ensuring they have equal access and facilities at polling stations. Information booklets and guides were also distributed to the public to simplify the technicalities of the election process.

Key Leadership

The program was coordinated under the leadership of NSS Program Officer Lijo Joseph. Student leaders who spearheaded the various field activities included:

  • Karthik Manoj

  • Abdul Rahman Riswan

  • Akansha Suryakanth

  • P. Adith

  • Alan George

Conclusion

The “Smart Voter” campaign successfully bridged the gap between the district administration’s initiatives and the local community. By taking the message of election literacy to the streets, the students of Holy Cross College have reaffirmed their commitment to social responsibility and the democratic progress of the nation.
