The National Service Scheme (NSS) unit of Holy Cross College, Kozhikode, recently launched a vibrant anti-drug awareness initiative titled “Life is Beautiful” at Muthappanpuzha Unnathi. This program is part of a larger state-wide campaign spearheaded by the Kerala State NSS Cell and the Higher Education Department to combat substance abuse and promote a healthy lifestyle among youth.
Creative Advocacy & Community Engagement
The campaign kicked off with high-energy creative performances designed to capture public attention and deliver a serious message through art:
-
Zumba & Flash Mob: Led by Assistant Professor and Zumba Trainer Athira Rajgopal, students performed a dynamic flash mob and Zumba routine to symbolize the energy and beauty of a healthy, drug-free life.
-
Door-to-Door Awareness: Moving beyond performances, dedicated volunteers visited local households to discuss the dangers of drug abuse and youth violence, distributing information to ensure the message reached every doorstep.
Fostering a Culture of Reading
In a unique addition to the anti-drug drive, the NSS unit emphasized intellectual development as a powerful shield against addiction. Under the Vayanamrutham project, volunteers donated more than 100 books to the local library at Muthappanpuzha, encouraging the community to find solace and growth in literature.
Official Recognition
The event was formally inaugurated by Ward Member Manoj Sebastian and presided over by the College Principal, Dr. Sr. Shiny George. The initiative received significant praise from local leaders and was featured prominently in major regional newspapers, including Mathrubhumi, Malayala Manorama, and Madhyamam, for its innovative approach to social issues.
By combining fitness, creative arts, and community service, the Holy Cross NSS volunteers have reaffirmed that the youth are indeed the driving force behind a safer, “greener,” and drug-free Kerala.
